Redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion Recalled Twice in One Week
The first recall pertains to the low-beam headlights installed on 19,106 units of the Fusion that were built between February 3, 2012, and October 20, 2012. In these Fusions, the projector coating for the low-beam headlights may have been improperly cured, reducing headlight brightness over time, which may lead to reduced visibility and increased risk of a crash.
Ford dealers will replace the headlight assemblies on the affected vehicles, starting the week of December 10. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID number for this recall is 12V553000, Ford's recall campaign number is 12C27, and owners with questions can contact the Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.
The second recall is related to a potential fire risk with the Fusion's optional 1.6-liter, turbocharged, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine. Because this recall is paired with the Ford Escape crossover SUV, which uses the same engine, the total number of affected Fusion vehicles is unknown, but the recall covers all models equipped with this engine that were manufactured between February 3, 2012 and November 29, 2012.
The problem is that if the engine overheats, it could cause fluid leaks. If leaking fluid comes into contact with an ignition source, such as a hot exhaust system, a fire could result. According to the NHTSA, Ford is working on a remedy for this problem, but is advising affected vehicle owners to contact their dealer or Ford to arrange alternate transportation. The Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center telephone number is 1-866-436-7332.
For reference, the NHTSA Campaign ID number for this recall is 12V551000, and the Ford recall campaign number is 12S41.
