New 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S Most Powerful 4-Door in Company History

2/6/2013
The new 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S is not a new performance-tuned version of the automaker's 4-seat, 4-door luxury sports car. Rather, the Rapide S is a replacement for the Rapide, one that is more powerful, more fuel efficient, and more capable than before, according to the automaker.

The 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S is equipped with restyled front and rear ends, as well as new aerodynamic improvements to aid high-speed stability. In particular, front styling elements, in combination with a new engine mounted lower in the car, allow the Rapide S to meet European pedestrian protection regulations.

According to Ian Minards, head of product development at Aston Martin, "Balance, poise and control are the keys to a successful sports car and the dynamic improvements we have made with Rapide S showcase our efforts to make this not just the most beautiful, but also the most beautifully balanced, car in its class."

The Aston Martin Rapide S model's new 6.0-liter V-12 engine generates 550 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and 457 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm, improvements of 80 horsepower and 14 lb.-ft. of torque over the previous model. Additionally, the engine's peak torque is offered at lower points in the rev range, helping the Rapide S to feel more energetic.

The front mid-mounted engine is paired with a recalibrated TouchTronic 6-speed automatic transmission mounted just forward of the rear wheels, which delivers power to the vehicle's rear wheels through a carbon fiber propeller shaft and a limited-slip differential. According to Aston Martin, the 4,387-pound Rapide S accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, compared to 5.1 seconds for the previous model. Top speed is a claimed 190 mph.

The new Rapide S is more powerful and faster than before, yet Aston Martin claims the vehicle is also more fuel-efficient than ever. Official EPA fuel-economy estimates are not finalized as this article is written.

A re-engineered aluminum platform with a lower center of gravity improves handling and responsiveness compared to the previous-generation Rapide, the company says. The 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S is equipped with a next-generation version of the company's Adaptive Handling System, which includes Normal, Sport and Track settings. Additionally, Aston Martin has recalibrated the Rapide S model's stability and traction control systems, and has improved the braking system, which employs 6-piston front and 4-piston rear gray-painted calipers. Staggered-width 20-inch wheels are standard, wrapped in 245/35 front and 295/30 rear tires.

An updated interior with improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control is installed inside of the new Rapide S. Standard equipment includes walnut wood interior trim, glass transmission selector switches, and push-button folding rear seats. Additionally, the Rapide S is equipped with bi-xenon headlights, LED taillights, heated front and rear seats, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a 1,000-watt premium audio system with an auxiliary audio input jack, iPod connection, and a USB port.

Options for this model include a variety of wheel designs, finishes and trims, plus semi-aniline premium leather, Duotone black and red perforated leather, ventilated front and rear seats, reversing camera, and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system. A Piano Black Interior Pack installs piano black lacquer trim on the dashboard, transmission tunnel trim, and interior door handles. Aston Martin also offers a new Carbon Exterior Pack for the Rapide S, which adds a front air splitter, rear wind diffuser, and mirror caps constructed of carbon fiber. In addition to the regular list of factory options, Aston Martin offers a "Q by Aston Martin" personalization service with bespoke color and materials selections.

Aston Martin says the new 2014 Rapide S goes on sale in February of 2013.
