BMW i8 Plug-in Hybrid Roadster Earns Award as Best Production Preview Model

7/5/2013
BMW's i8 plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) Spyder Roadster received a second honor recently from a group of two dozen North American automotive journalists. The roadster was named best Production Preview model in the North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards competition. In 2012, the i8, which debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show, won the North American Concept Car of the Year award.

The BMW i8 is the third model in the BMW i Series that focuses on developing cutting-edge and emotionally appealing mobility concepts, according to BMW. In a statement, the German premium automakers says the i8 offers genuine sports car performance, with fuel consumption that is no higher than expected from a small car. The i8 plug-in hybrid is equipped with a performance electric motor combined with a powerful internal combustion engine that produces up to 354 horsepower, which allows acceleration from 0-60 mpg in 4.5 seconds and also provides up to 87 mpg, according to BMW. The model's lithium-ion battery can be recharged relatively quickly from a home outlet.

In addition to the award for the best Production Preview vehicle, the other segment categories and concept models receiving awards this year included the best Concept Car: Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis--a concept for the next-generation Hyundai Genesis; and the best Truck/SUV Concept: Ford Atlas Pickup--a concept that foreshadows the next Ford F-150. Concept vehicles in the running for an award debuted  at the most recent North American auto shows in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.
