2014 Ford Transit Connect Named International Van of the Year

By: Jeff Youngs, 9/19/2013
A jury of 24 European journalists has named the redesigned 2014 Ford Transit Connect as the International Van of the Year 2014, announcing the award at a commercial vehicle exhibition in Moscow, Russia. The Transit Connect beat the updated 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to win the accolade.

"The all-new Transit Connect impressed the jury on a number of fronts, and above all by the fact that Ford has succeeded in building a light van with a strong accent on economics," said Pieter Wieman, chairman of the journalist jury.

Barb Samardzich, vice president of product development, Ford of Europe, added: "The new Transit Connect is just as tough and hard-working as all our commercial vehicle range, and comes with smart new looks and much lower fuel bills." Ford also points out that in Europe the Transit Connect is offered with the company's 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine, which earned International Engine of the Year honors in both 2012 and 2013.

Offered in cargo van and passenger wagon styles, the U.S.-spec 2014 Ford Transit Connect is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, each driving the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can opt for CNG/LPG preparation with the 2.5-liter engine.

Short- and long-wheelbase models are available, with cargo van models holding as much as 130 cu. ft. of cargo, and passenger wagon models carrying as many as 7 passengers. Towing capacity is limited to 2,000 pounds, but a Transit Connect can carry up to 1,710 pounds of payload.

Additionally, this new van can be optioned with Sync Bluetooth connectivity, a MyFord Touch infotainment system, reversing camera, and front and rear park-assist sensors. The passenger wagon can even be equipped with leather seats and a panoramic sunroof.

The 2014 Transit Connect goes on sale in the United States in the first quarter of 2014.
