Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible to Debut in Detroit
To achieve such velocities, the 5,501-pound Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible is equipped with a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter W12 engine generating 616 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter peaking across a broad range from 2,000 rpm to 5,000 rpm. Bentley claims that the Continental GT Speed's powertrain provides a 12% improvement in fuel economy and driving range, as well as a reduction in emissions. Expected fuel economy ratings are 12 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, with 15 mpg returned in combined driving.
An 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and an all-wheel-drive system are standard, the latter providing a 40:60 front-to-rear power distribution. A standard Sport mode sharpens throttle response and transmission shifting when selected, and Bentley has recalibrated the traction and stability control system to allow for greater driver control. In addition to a performance-oriented powertrain, the Continental GT Speed Convertible is equipped with 4-wheel vented disc brakes, sport-tuned steering, sport exhaust system, and a lowered sport suspension.
To separate it from less expensive and powerful variants, the Continental GT Speed Convertible is equipped with unique silver or dark-tint 21-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in wide, low-profile 275/35 tires, dark tinted grilles, and rifled elliptical exhaust outlets.
Inside, the handcrafted, leather-wrapped cabin features bright or dark tinted engine-turned aluminum trim panels, along with Muliner Driving Specification equipment, including diamond-quilted leather seat upholstery in 17 different colors. Buyers can replace the aluminum with a choice of either wood veneer or carbon fiber. Both a seat massage feature and a Naim for Bentley custom audio sound system are optional.
According to Bentley chairman and chief executive officer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, "The new GT Speed Convertible...is designed for those who accept no compromise."
The Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible debuts on January 14 at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where it certainly could put its standard four-layer insulated top and optional neck warming system to good use.
