2014 Volvo XC60 R-Design is Quicker and Better Connected

4/8/2013
Volvo is making significant changes for the 2014 model year, dropping the C30 hatchback and C70 convertible, adding the V60 Sports Wagon, and putting the XC90 on ice in advance of a redesigned 3-row SUV due in the middle of this decade. As a part of this lineup re-boot, the remaining models, including the 2014 XC60, receive freshened styling, new technology, and other updates designed to keep them competitive.

The updated 2014 Volvo XC60 debuted to an American audience at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, with R-Design enhancements. The XC60 R-Design is a sport-tuned version of the XC60 T6, equipped with a slight horsepower and torque bump, firmer suspension tuning, and larger wheels. Its turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine delivers 325 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 354 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,000 rpm and 3,600 rpm, fed to all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.

Advanced Quick Shift (AQS) transmission programming is new for the 2014 XC60 R-Design. When the driver chooses the transmission's Sport mode or uses the SUV's new paddle shifters, AQS improves shift times by 30% to 50%, depending on the gears that are changing. The result? Volvo claims the new XC60 R-Design accelerates to 60 mph half a second faster than before, hitting that speed in 6.2 seconds.

In addition to stiffer shocks, springs, and anti-roll bars, the R-Design model is equipped with standard 19-inch aluminum wheels, stickier tires, and a new torque vectoring system called Corner Traction Control. Optionally, Volvo installs 20-inch wheels on this model.

To help the XC60 R-Design stand out, it has a restyled front end featuring a Tech Matte Black grille with a Silk Metal diagonal strip. Round tailpipes are located on either side of a rear diffuser panel. Inside, the R-Design includes leather-wrapped sport seats, a black headliner, stainless steel doorsill plates, and a new Adaptive Digital Display rendering the instrumentation according to Elegance, Eco, and Performance themes.

Additionally, all 2014 XC60 models have a refined interior, and can be optioned with a heated windshield and heated steering wheel. Sensus Connected Touch technology turns the XC60 into a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot, and new safety options include cross traffic alert, an updated blind-spot information system, and a new Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake system.
