2014 Honda Odyssey Adds In-Vehicle Vacuum, Improved Safety, More Technology

3/29/2013
Introduced at the 2013 New York International Auto Show in its top trim level, the Touring Elite, the 2014 Honda Odyssey receives styling, safety, and equipment updates as part of what the automaker calls a "thorough refresh" of its family-friendly minivan.

For 2014, the Honda Odyssey employs a new Advanced Compatibility Engineering II body structure, strengthened to help the minivan perform well in the new small overlap frontal-impact crash test administered by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All 2014 Honda Odyssey models will have a new expanded-view driver-side mirror, and the 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite will offer forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning safety systems.

Though it resembles the current model, the 2014 Honda Odyssey's front styling is new from the windshield and doors forward. Highlights include a new aluminum hood, reshaped aluminum front fenders, restyled bumper, and a redesigned grille. The Odyssey Touring Elite trim level has dark-finish projector-beam headlights, chrome-trimmed fog lights, two-tone mirror housings, and an LED light bar between the taillights.

Revised trim and a redesigned center control panel accent the 2014 Odyssey's interior, and, depending on the trim level selected, the minivan is now available with SMS text messaging capability, HD Radio, and HondaLink smartphone pairing and cloud-based Internet services, including access to Facebook and Twitter. A new Smart Entry passive entry and push-button ignition system is also offered for the 2014 Odyssey.

Available only for the 2014 Odyssey Elite, the new HondaVAC system includes a powerful vacuum developed in conjunction with Shop-Vac, a replaceable filter and canister bag, and a variety of nozzle attachments. It is located inside a panel on the left wall of the cargo area, and Honda says it reaches every location in the Odyssey's interior. The vacuum never needs to be plugged in or recharged, and operates for up to eight minutes when the engine is not running.

Honda announced no other changes to the 2014 Odyssey lineup. The updated model goes on sale in the summer of 2013.
