BMW X4 Concept Breaks Cover in Advance of Shanghai Auto Show

4/8/2013
In advance of its debut at the 2013 Auto Shanghai (Shanghai Auto Show), images of the new BMW X4 Concept have been released by the automaker, accompanied by very few details. The X4 Concept provides a preview of a new Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) that the automaker intends to produce. In describing the X4 Concept, the company refers to its crossover SUVs that are equipped with a fastback roofline as SACs.

In a press release discussing the new BMW X4 Concept model's exterior design in great detail, the automaker says the new SAC offers "eye-catching proportions" and "striking interplay of surfaces" that are "brimming with emotional appeal, dynamism, and...sturdiness" and creating "a vibrant contrast of light and shadow that exudes a feeling of agility and power." In summarizing the new BMW X4 Concept's styling, BMW says it reflects the "promise of outstanding performance and driving dynamics."

Philosophically, the new BMW X4 takes the same approach as the BMW X6, which is to replace the boxier styling of a BMW Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) with a fastback roofline to create a new model. In this case, unconfirmed by BMW, the donor platform is the BMW X3, with which the X4 will share a Spartanburg, South Carolina, assembly line when it enters production. As for powertrain details, BMW says only that the production version of the X4 will offer a choice between rear-wheel drive and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

The X4 Concept appearing in Shanghai will show up with Long Beach Blue paint, and will come equipped with matte black protective lower body cladding, 21-inch bi-color aluminum wheels with polished spokes, and a dark inner finish. BMW's traditional kidney grille, circular headlamps, and Hofmeister kink styling elements are present and accounted for, with a mix of high-gloss metallic, high-gloss black, and chrome trim detailing.

The X4 Concept is equipped with full LED headlights, perhaps previewing an option that will be offered in production. In the back, the SAC features thin L-shaped LED taillights, dual exhaust outlets, and design elements that emphasize the vehicle's horizontal proportions.

The automaker says the production version of the BMW X4 Concept will launch in 2014.
