Nissan Leaf Sales Top 25,000 Units

After approximately 2.5 years on the market, Nissan is celebrating the sale of more than 25,000 units of its Leaf electric vehicle (EV) to U.S. customers. Introduced in limited markets in late 2010, availability spread nationwide by the end of 2011, and the Leaf experienced its highest monthly sales ever in March of this year, with a nearly 425% increase year over year. "With more than 25,000 Leafs in the U.S. and 62,000 around the world, we're seeing the adoption curve for EVs accelerate, and there is tremendous interest not only on the West Coast but in a number of new strongholds like Atlanta, Raleigh, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis, and many more," said Erik Gottfried, Nissan's director of electric vehicle marketing and sales strategy, suggesting this signals a bright future for the Leaf.

Priced from $29,650 including an $850 destination charge, the 2013 Nissan Leaf is a 5-passenger, front-wheel-drive, 5-door liftback classified by the EPA as a midsize car. Three progressively equipped trim levels are available--S, SV, SL--all powered by an 80-kw electric motor paired with a 24-kWh Lithium-ion battery. EPA mileage ratings are 129/102/115 MPGe (city/highway/combined miles-per-gallon equivalent). Buyers have the choice of two on-board chargers, including a 3.6-kw unit that can recharge the Leaf in as little as 7 hours when plugged into a 220-volt outlet, and a 6.6-kw option that cuts charging time to 4 hours. When using a 110-volt power source, the process requires 21 hours.

Unfortunately, with only 200 public charging stations across the country, finding one to recharge the battery isn't always easy. Nissan has pledged to address that problem by tripling the number of stations to 600, including 50 that have already been installed in areas with heavy EV use.
