2013 Lexus ES Earns 5-Star Overall NHTSA Crash-Test Rating

12/6/2012
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the redesigned 2013 Lexus ES earned a 5-star overall rating, the best possible score. Aside from receiving a 4-star rating for rollover resistance, which is common for vehicles like this, the ES achieved a 4-star rating for driver protection in a side-impact collision. In all other individual assessments, the NHTSA awarded the redesigned 2013 ES with 5-star ratings.

Lexus redesigned the ES for 2013, stretching the car's wheelbase to add extra rear-seat leg room. It now shares a platform with the 2013 Toyota Avalon, and is offered with a choice between a gas-electric hybrid powertrain and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

For 2013, the Lexus ES is equipped with 10 standard air bags, Whiplash Injury Lessening front seat design, and Lexus Safety Connect telematics with 1 free year of Automatic Collision Notification service. Safety-related options for the new ES include front and rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, active cruise control system, pre-collision warning system, lane-departure warning system, blind-spot information system, and rear cross-traffic alert technology.

The new 2013 Lexus ES dramatically improves on the NHTSA crash-test rating for the previous-generation Lexus ES. The old model received a 3-star overall crash-test rating due to a 2-star rating for rear passenger protection in a side impact, and a 2-star rating for protection in the side-impact pole test.
