The Ford lineup of PHEVs includes the Fusion Energi midsize sedan and the C-Max Energi compact conventional car. Ford reports that it sold 2,179 Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi vehicles last month, while it says Toyota sold 2,095 units of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model.
The two Ford PHEVs outsold both the Nissan Leaf (2,002 unit sales) and the Chevrolet Volt in October. Volt sales increased in low double-digits to 2,022 units vs. 1,766 unit sales in September 2013.
It is Ford's best month ever for plug-in hybrid sales, shattering the previous record of 1,508 vehicles sold in September. The company reports that California accounts for 38% of its PHEV sales, but there is stronger demand in some Midwestern and Eastern cities such as New York, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Plug-in hybrid sales for the industry are up 32% through the first 10 months of 2013, Ford reports. The industry sold 39,083 PHEVs through October, compared with 29,526 vehicles in 2012. October plug-in hybrid sales came within 40 units of setting an all-time monthly record for the segment, according to Ford. Ford has delivered 5,386 C-Max and 4,428 Fusion Energi PHEVs year to date.
