2015 Chevy Corvette Gets New Performance-Oriented Automatic Transmission Option

By: Jeff Youngs, 4/9/2014
Just one year after launching the redesigned Corvette, Chevrolet has announced that the 2015 Corvette Stingray will be available with a new 8-speed automatic transmission specifically engineered for performance driving. The new transmission will replace the 6-speed automatic currently offered as an option for the 2014 models. A 6-speed manual gearbox will continue as standard equipment.

Chevrolet says that the 2015 Corvette Stingray's new 8-speed automatic is based on the same one that is going to be used in the new 2015 Corvette Z06, tuned for use with the Stingray's normally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine. The new transmission features paddle shifters and full manual control over gear changes, is 8 lbs. lighter than the 6-speed automatic it replaces, and is predicted by the automaker to reduce internal friction and to improve fuel economy by 5%.

"It was designed to enhance the Stingray's driving experience, with performance on par with dual-clutch designs, but without sacrificing refinement," said Bill Goodrich, an assistant chief engineer for automatic transmissions at General Motors, about the Stingray's new 8-speed automatic.

To underscore this mission, the transmission controller reportedly analyzes driving conditions and adjusts transmission performance up to 160 times per second. Chevrolet claims that the Corvette Stingray's new 8-speed automatic will execute wide-open-throttle upshifts as much as 8/100ths quicker than a PDK automated manual gearbox in a new Porsche 911 Carrera.

Designed and engineered in-house, the Corvette's new 8-speed automatic transmission will be built in Toledo, Ohio.
