2015 Lexus NX Plugs Hole in Lexus SUV Lineup

By: Jeff Youngs, 4/14/2014
Today, if you want to buy a small Lexus crossover SUV, you are out of luck. Next year, that changes with the introduction of the new 2015 Lexus NX, a compact 5-passenger SUV that the company is calling the Ultimate Urban Crossover, and which will slot into the lineup beneath the popular Lexus RX. A global product, the 2015 Lexus NX makes its world debut at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

Three models will be available, though Lexus has not confirmed whether all three variants will be sold in the United States. The entry-level model is called the Lexus NX 200, and while powertrain details have not been released in advance of the SUV's debut in Beijing, this model is likely equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Lexus has confirmed that the NX 200t features a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Each will be paired with front-wheel drive, and what Lexus calls All-Weather Drive will be offered as an option.

A hybrid version of the new Lexus NX will also be available. Called the Lexus NX 300h, it is equipped with a gas-electric hybrid powertrain that is expected to include a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, electric assist motor, nickel-metal hydride battery pack, continuously variable transmission, and regenerative brakes.

Lexus characterizes the new NX crossover SUV's exterior design as aggressive. Front styling features the Lexus spindle-style grille, flanked by LED headlights and LED running lights. Flared wheel arches, integrated door handle lighting, and standard 17-in. or optional 18-in. aluminum wheels characterize the NX model's profile, while around back this new luxury crossover features L-shaped taillights and design details intended to mimic the front styling. The 2015 Lexus NX 300h is set apart with a handful of visual changes including a unique grille, different wheels, and a modified rear diffuser panel.

As is true of the larger Lexus RX, the new 2015 Lexus NX is available as an F Sport model. It is equipped with larger aluminum wheels and a mesh grille insert on the outside, while the inside features a unique interior treatment that includes gray wood trim, metal pedals, black headliner, and an F Sport steering wheel.

Inside, the new Lexus NX features soft-touch surfaces and a combination of wood and metallic trim. Lexus says the new crossover features a low hip point for easier entry and exit, combined with lots of headroom and a long cargo floor. Available cabin décor includes 2-tone leather, exposed seat stitching, and kneepads on the center console for improved driver and front passenger comfort.

Available equipment includes a wireless smartphone-charging tray, new Lexus Remote Touch controller with a touch-sensitive entry pad, Multi-Information Display with a G sensor and a turbo boost meter, and a head-up display. The Lexus NX can also be equipped with an all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system, blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert technology.

More details about the U.S.-specification 2015 Lexus NX will be available closer to the vehicle's official arrival in showrooms.
