Nissan to Add Leaf EV Quick Chargers in 21 Key U.S. Markets

Nissan this week said it plans to install more than 100 DC quick chargers at more than 100 of its dealerships that sell the Leaf electric vehicle (EV). The selected dealers are located in 21 key U.S. markets, and the impetus for the company to install the chargers is to expand the electric charging infrastructure across the country and build consumer awareness. The new chargers can power up a vehicle's battery from depleted to an 80% charge in close to 30 minutes, according to the automaker.

The rollout of the quick chargers begins this summer in East Coast markets. It's anticipated that the expansion of the charger network will help alleviate range anxiety for potential customers, according to Nissan's director of EV Infrastructure Strategy. The expanded rollout follows a pilot program with 24 dealers in California markets including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento, in addition to Seattle, Washington. Nissan expects to have quick chargers installed and operating at the 100 additional dealerships by April 1, 2014.

The addition of these quick chargers in conjunction with AeroVironment, Nissan's charging partner, also may help boost business at Nissan dealerships, according to one general manager at a Nissan store in Los Angeles, who has benefitted from the installation of the quick charger for commuters. Charging sessions have increased in double digits since the program began.

This year, Nissan has delivered as many Leafs in the first 6 months as it sold during the entire 2012 calendar year. Through the first half of 2013, Nissan has sold 3,578 Leaf EVs imported from Japan and 6,261 that were built in the United States at Nissan's plant in Smyrna, TN, for a total of 9,839 Leaf sales. A year ago, Nissan sold 9,819 Leaf EVs in the U.S. market.
