2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive Blends Luxury with Gas-Free Motoring

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive, equipped with an electric powertrain that provides 115 miles of driving range, made its world debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The B-Class is a 5-door hatchback model sold by Mercedes-Benz in global markets and was last redesigned for the 2011 model year. The United States will be the first country to receive the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive when it goes on sale in early 2014.

The new electric car is equipped with a 100-kW electric motor that generates 134 horsepower and 228 lb.-ft. of torque and can accelerate the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds, according to Mercedes. A rechargeable 28 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack is located in the car's floor, supplying a maximum driving range of 115 miles. The automaker says that it takes less than 2 hours to achieve a 50% battery charge using a 240-volt electrical outlet. Full charge time, or the amount of time recharging takes using a standard 115-volt household power outlet, was not revealed.

The 2014 Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive provides seating for 5 passengers. The car is equipped with a free-floating dashboard display screen, an audio system with a 5.8-inch touch screen, and a navigation system. A collision-prevention assist system with adaptive braking technology is also standard.

COMAND Online with Internet access is optional for the B-Class Electric Drive, which allows the car's owner to remotely configure the vehicle, perform system checks, and even pre-condition the cab for driving by activating the climate control system. Additional options include an active park system, blind-spot assist, and lane-keeping assist.

"The B-Class Electric Drive meets the wishes of many customers for emission-free driving without foregoing the hallmark attributes of a Mercedes-Benz, namely safety, comfort and, of course, not to forget exhilarating driving pleasure," said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, member of the Mercedes-Benz Cars Board of Management responsible for sales and marketing.
