Recall Roundup: Air Bags, Key Rings Spur a Tidal Wave of Vehicle Recalls

By: Jeff Youngs, 7/8/2014

During the past week, various automakers issued recalls of vehicles bought or registered in certain states because of issues with front-seat air bags. Also, GM has recalled more than 3 million vehicles because of a possible ignition-switch defect. Details are below, in alphabetical order by manufacturer.

BMW: Regional Air Bag Recall

BMW is conducting a limited regional recall, involving an undetermined number of vehicles, for certain model-year 2001-2005 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi, and 2001-2006 325Ci and 330Ci vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the driver side and/or passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the frontal air bag(s) free of charge. This recall is expected to begin during August 2014. Owners may contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-525-7417, and may refer to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 14V348000.

2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro
General Motors (GM) is recalling 464,712 2010-2014 Chevrolet Camaro vehicles manufactured December 3, 2008, to May 23, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with a knee, which could knock the key out of the run position, turning off the engine. If the key is not in the run position, the air bags might not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash; moreover, a key knocked out of the run position could cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will remove the key blade from the original flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies, and provide two new keys and two key rings per key. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14294; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V346000. Note: Until the recall has been performed, it is very important that drivers adjust their seat and steering column to allow clearance between their knee and the ignition key.

2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze
GM is recalling 29,019 model-year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the driver's front air bag inflator may have been manufactured with an incorrect part. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, the air bag's inflator could rupture and the air bag might not inflate. The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants. Additionally, if the air bag does not inflate, the driver is at an increased risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side air bag, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14305; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V372000.

Chrysler: Regional Air Bag Recall
Chrysler is conducting a limited regional recall, involving an undetermined number of vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the driver side and/or passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag inflator(s) free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403, and may refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V354000.

2014 Ford F-150
Ford is recalling 4,629 model-year 2014 Ford F-150 trucks manufactured May 26, 2014, to June 19, 2014, and equipped with Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). The affected vehicles may have an incorrectly installed EPAS gear motor position sensor magnet that can lead to a total loss of steering control.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EPAS steering gear, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on July 7, 2014. Note: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until they have been remedied. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S09; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 14V316000.

Ford: Regional Air Bag Recall
Ford is conducting a limited regional recall of 58,669 model-year 2005-2007 Mustang, 2005-2006 GT, and 2004 Ranger vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the driver side and/or passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants. Specifically, in 2005-2007 Mustang, the driver's air bag inflators are affected. In the 2004 Ranger, the passenger's air bag inflators are affected. In the 2005-2006 GT, both driver's and passenger's air bag inflators are affected.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace any defective air bag inflators, as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14B04.

GM: Ignition Switch Hazard on Various Vehicles
GM is recalling a total of 3,141,731 model-year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. This defect can also affect the safe operation of the air bag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two 13mm key rings and key insert into the vehicle's ignition keys, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet).
