2014 Mazda 3 Hits the Streets of New York with Lean Lines, Lots of Technology

6/28/2013
This week, Mazda unveiled its third-generation 2014 Mazda 3 compact hatchback on the streets of New York in the Chelsea neighborhood, which was the stamping ground for infamous members of the punk rock and roll group of the 1970s--the Sex Pistols. The new technology-laden Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan, which is built on an all-new platform and has been designed to be more fuel efficient, will reach dealer showrooms this fall. Pricing and fuel-economy ratings have not been announced yet.

The Mazda 3 is the brand's top-seller in the U.S. market. Some 3.5 million Mazda 3s have been sold worldwide during the 10 years it has been in the market, according to Mazda. The current model is one of the 10 best-selling compact cars in the U.S. market, according to J.D. Power research.

Mazda claims that the all-new 2014 Mazda 3 is "lower and leaner" and weighs less than the previous version and includes SkyActiv1 technologies to boost fuel efficiency and enhance engine performance. The redesigned Mazda 3 is built on a platform that has a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase, but is 1.8 inches shorter in overall length than the current model.

The new Mazda 3 will be available with one of two 4-cylinder engines: a 2.0-liter rated at 155 horsepower, and a 2.5-liter engine rated at 184 horsepower. Models will be mated with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

A few of the notable changes in the redesigned 2014 Mazda 3:
  • For driver comfort, pedals are closer to the center of the floor rather than off to the right of the driver as in many vehicles.
  • Rear seatbacks are nearly 2 inches higher and there is more leg room for passenger comfort.
  • Front and rear shoulder room is 3 inches wider than in the previous model.
  • To provide information in the driver's line of sight, a new clear pop-up head-up display called Active Driving Display on the dashboard features speedometer, navigation directions and other information. A touch screen with other functions also resides in the center of the dash.
  • Mazda has added a new active grille shutter mounted in front of the radiator to improve aerodynamic performance and to help enhance fuel economy, along with a proprietary regenerative braking system.
  • The new model will be offered in eight colors, including the premium metallic finish Soul Red Metallic and two new colors--Titanium Flash Mica and Deep Crystal Blue Mica.
  • Outside mirrors are mounted onto the doors instead of the car's body to aid visibility when looking over mirrors from the driver's seat.
  • A redesigned infotainment system that, according to Mazda, is more intuitive and less distracting to allow for better connectivity with smartphones and tablets. In addition to music access through AM/FM radio, CD, and USB/port connections, Mazda offers Internet-based apps and an optional Bose premium audio system.
  • Newly available emerging safety features including a High Beam Control system that switches headlamps between high and low beam; blind-spot monitoring system; lane-departure warning system; forward-obstruction warning system, and more.
