Apple's Siri Digital Assistant Added to Chevy Sonic and Spark

11/27/2012
General Motors has announced that its Chevrolet MyLink technology will integrate Apple's Siri digital assistant on the Sonic and Spark small cars early in 2013. The move will allow vehicle owners who own an iPhone with iOS 6 software to use the Siri voice-recognition technology in "Eyes Free" mode to control smartphone features.

To use the technology, the iPhone must be paired with MyLink via Bluetooth. A button on the steering wheel actives the Eyes Free mode, and Siri is ready to perform actions such as making a call from the owner's list of contacts, playing a song from an iTunes library, and receiving or sending text messages. The Eyes Free mode further minimizes distraction by keeping the screen of the iPhone from lighting up.

The move appears to acknowledge that the young, tech-savvy drivers who buy the Spark and Sonic could most benefit from this new feature. "It says a lot about our commitment to small-car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands," said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. "Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers."
