2014 BMW 328d Diesel Reported to Get 45 MPG for Fewer Than $40,000

4/2/2013
As summer wanes, fans of the diesel engine will have another vehicle to consider for the 2014 model year. The new 2014 BMW 328d, expected in 4-door 328d Sedan and 5-door 328d Sports Wagon body styles, will arrive at dealerships wearing a reported price tag a number less than $40,000.

A turbocharged, direct-injected, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine is installed under the 2014 328d model's hood, generating an estimated 184 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,750 rpm. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard, powering the 328d's rear wheels. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is optional.

The new 2014 BMW 328d will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 7.5 seconds, BMW says, and underbody panels designed to help improve fuel economy contribute to a rumored 35 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. According to BMW, the engine is B7 bio-diesel compatible.

Aside from "328d" badges, the new 3 Series diesel is indistinguishable from gasoline models. BMW says the 2014 328d will be offered in Luxury, Modern, Sport, and M Sport trim lines, and can be upgraded with the same options that are available for other 3 Series models.

Official engine power ratings, fuel-economy estimates, and prices will be available closer to the 328d's on-sale date.
