2014 Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG Unleashes Most Powerful 4-Cylinder in the World
"The A45 AMG will enable Mercedes AMG to appeal to new customers and tap new markets," said Ola Källenius, chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "We are adding an extremely attractive model with exceptional performance data to our range of unique high-performance automobiles."
Equipped with a hand-built, turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, the European version of the A45 AMG is rated to deliver 360 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and approximately 330 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,250 rpm and 5,000 rpm. An AMG 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is standard, able to vary power distribution evenly between the front and rear drive wheels. Under normal driving conditions, the A45 AMG is front-wheel drive, but the system sends as much as half of the engine's output to the rear wheels as conditions warrant. Mercedes-Benz claims the A45 AMG accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
"With the new A45 AMG we have well and truly achieved our aim of developing the most dynamic, powerful and efficient four-cylinder series production car," said Tobias Moers, head of overall vehicle development and board member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "With its impressive high-tech package and the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the A45 AMG is a thoroughbred AMG through and through."
A 7-speed AMG SpeedShift Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is standard, offering double-declutching on downshifts and a Race Start function. Three driver-selected shift programs are provided, including Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual modes. The engine's fuel-conserving automatic stop/start technology is active only in Controlled Efficiency mode. The transmission also includes a Momentary M Mode, which gives the driver brief manual control via the steering wheel's paddle shifters when the gearbox is placed in Controlled Efficiency or Sport modes, followed by a rapid return to automatic shifting.
Additional mechanical upgrades for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG include a high-performance engine cooling system, and AMG high-performance braking system with 4-wheel-disc ventilated and perforated brake discs, electric AMG speed-sensitive sport steering, AMG sport suspension, and 18-inch light alloy wheels in a twin-spoke design, painted in high-sheen Titanium Gray. The A45 AMG is also equipped with an AMG sport exhaust system with dual square, chrome-dipped outlets. According to Mercedes, "The two striking tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating, full engine sound which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration."
When the 2014 Mercedes A45 AMG goes on sale, it will include a 3-stage Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Curve Dynamic Assist technology. Curve Dynamic Assist automatically brakes the vehicle's inside front wheel to produce "precise cornering" and to ensure that "the vehicle remains under control at all times," according to the automaker. Driver-controlled settings include "ESP On," "ESP Sport Handling," and "ESP Off." According to Mercedes, "When the driver steps on the brake pedal in the course of braking in 'Sport Handling' mode or 'ESP Off' mode, all the safety functions of the ESP system are restored."
The A45 AMG receives unique AMG styling employing plenty of matte gray trim. Inside, sport seats upholstered in Artico manufactured leather with Dinamica microfiber inserts and red contrast stitching are offered, as well as carbon fiber dash trim, red seat belts, AMG door sill panels, and AMG instrumentation with a RaceTimer function.
Options for the European-market version of the A45 AMG include an AMG Aerodynamics package, AMG Carbon Fiber package, AMG Exclusive package, AMG Night package, 19-inch aluminum wheels, red-painted brake calipers, and upgraded seats, suspension and exhaust. The 2014 A45 AMG goes on sale in Europe in the summer of 2013.
