Recall Roundup: Government Shutdown Edition, Part II

By: Jeff Youngs, 10/15/2013
With the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) now furloughed for two weeks, official recall notices are still not being issued for vehicle defects. Instead, General Motors and Toyota have made it known that their dealers need to see thousands of vehicles in order to make repairs. The voluntary recalls are listed below.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado
General Motors is recalling 21,721 units of its redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra. The vehicles affected by this recall are equipped with manually adjustable front seats. In a rear-end collision, the seats could move within their tracks, thus increasing the risk for injury.

A timetable for conducting this recall has not been established as this article is written. Owners will be notified, and dealers will make repairs at no cost to the customer.

2013-2014 Chevrolet Sonic
Chevrolet is recalling approximately 1,600 units of the 2013 and 2014 model-year Chevrolet Sonic due to improperly welded fuel tank straps. If the strap separates from the fuel tank, the fuel tank could move out of place, or could separate from the car. Either way, the situation increases the risk of a fire.

A timetable for conducting this recall has not been established as this article is written. Owners will be notified, and dealers will make repairs at no cost to the customer.

Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla
Approximately 10,000 units of the 2013 Toyota Avalon, 2013 and 2014 Toyota Camry, and 2014 Toyota Corolla are heading back to dealerships to get a new wiper switch. Toyota says that when this part was assembled, electrical contacts on the switch may have been manufactured incorrectly. A short could result when moving the switch from the "Off" position to the "Mist" position, rendering them inoperative.

Toyota has not established a timeframe for the wiper switch replacement, but once owners are notified, dealers will make repairs at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owners can contact Toyota with question by calling 1-800-331-4331.
