2014 Mercedes CLA-Class Emphasizes Style over Space

1/25/2013
Starting in September of 2013, people shopping for an affordable new Mercedes-Benz will have another model to consider in addition to the C-Class lineup and GLK-Class SUV. Meet the 2014 Mercedes CLA-Class, a new 4-door coupe that the automaker says is inspired by the larger CLS-Class model.

If you feel like you've seen this car before, you have. It was called the Concept Style Coupe, and Mercedes says that the styling has transferred over to the production model nearly intact, right down to its studded sport grille and record-breaking (according to Mercedes) 0.23 coefficient of aerodynamic drag. Initially offered as the CLA250 and CLA250 4Matic, the compact vehicle provides seating for four people and includes standard 17-inch aluminum wheels with run-flat tires.

A special Launch Edition model will be offered for a limited time, painted Mountain Grey metallic and equipped with black 18-inch wheels, unique black upholstery with neon contrast stitching, and several upgrades including a panoramic sunroof, navigation system, and a premium audio system. A performance-tuned CLA45 AMG is planned, with details to come at a later date.

The CLA250 is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission is standard and includes shift paddles to allow the driver to select gears. A front-wheel-drive model, the CLA250 is offered with 4Matic all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution as an option.

Standard automatic stop/start technology shuts the CLA250's engine off while the vehicle is idling at intersections or in traffic in an effort to conserve fuel. A sport suspension is standard, and the CLA250 is equipped with electromechanical steering that includes technology designed to help resolve oversteer and understeer, and to compensate for crosswinds, road crowns, torque-steer, and other driving conditions.

Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming and a cloud-based Mbrace 2 smartphone integration and telematics system are standard equipment for the 2014 Mercedes CLA-Class, as well as Attention Assist technology and a Collision Prevention Assist system. Front occupants sit in sport-bolstered seats.

Bi-xenon headlights are optional for the 2014 CLA-Class, and buyers have a choice between burl walnut wood, black ash wood, and aluminum interior trim. Parktronic with Advanced Parking Assist, which can autonomously park the CLA-Class in both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, also resides on the CLA250's option list, and this new Mercedes model can be upgraded with a Driver Assistance package adding an adaptive cruise control system, blind-spot assist system, and a lane-keeping assist system.

Three additional option packages can be added to the new 2014 Mercedes CLA250. The Premium package adds automatic climate control, heated front seats, premium sound system, universal garage door opener, and more. The Multi-media package provides a 7-inch dash-mounted display screen, navigation system, reversing camera, and voice-recognition technology, among other items. The Sport package contains 18-inch AMG-style aluminum wheels, drilled front brake discs, silver-tipped grille studs, body kit, and unique stripes on the vehicle's seats.

Additional details regarding the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class will be available near its official on-sale date.
