Recall Roundup: Brake System Problems Impact Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Subaru

4/9/2013
Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Subaru are each recalling vehicles for problems associated with their braking systems. Additionally, Buick, Hyundai and Mitsubishi are asking vehicle owners to return to dealers for unrelated issues. This week's recall roundup covers all of these new recalls, in alphabetical order by manufacturer.

2013 Buick Encore
Buick is recalling a total of 144 Encores built between December 9, 2012, and December 28, 2012. The affected vehicles are equipped with an optional heated steering wheel, and the automaker says that the steering wheel fastener may have been improperly installed, allowing the steering wheel to come loose or separate from the steering column, increasing the risk of a crash.

Buick dealers will inspect and repair the affected vehicles, free of charge, beginning April 12. Owners may contact General Motors with questions at 1-800-521-7300, referencing GM recall campaign number 13098. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall campaign ID number is 13V105000.

Hyundai Brake Stop Lamp Switch Recall

Hyundai is recalling 1,059,824 vehicles because the braking system's stop lamp switch may malfunction, causing the brake lights to fail or the cruise control system to remain engaged even if the brake pedal is pressed. If either situation occurs, there is an increased risk of a crash. Additional systems potentially affected by the component failure include push-button start/stop ignition systems, brake/transmission interlock system, and the stability control system malfunction warning light.

The models affected by this recall include the 2007-2009 Hyundai Accent; 2007-2010 Hyundai Elantra; 2010-2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe; 2007-2011 Hyundai Santa Fe; 2011 Hyundai Sonata; 2007-2009 Hyundai Tucson; and 2008-2009 Hyundai Veracruz. Hyundai says dealers will start making repairs, free of charge, by June of 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai with questions at 1-800-633-5151, referencing Hyundai recall campaign number 110. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V113000.

2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra
Separately, Hyundai is recalling 186,254 units of the Elantra that were built between November 12, 2010, and March 5, 2013. In a collision in which the side-impact curtain air bags deploy, a bracket mounted to the headliner could be displaced, increasing the risk for head injury.

To remedy the situation, Hyundai dealers will apply adhesive strips to the car's headliner, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai with questions by calling 1-800-633-5151, and referencing Hyundai recall campaign number 109. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V115000.

Kia Brake Stop Lamp Switch Recall
Kia is recalling 623,658 vehicles affected by the same stop lamp switch problem as Hyundai models (see above for details). The affected models include the 2011 Kia Optima; 2007-2010 Kia Rondo; 2007 Kia Sedona; 2010-2011 Kia Soul; and 2007-2010 Kia Sportage.

Kia says affected owners will receive a notification of this recall in May, followed by a second notification when replacement parts are available at the dealership, which will repair the vehicles free of charge. Owners may contact Kia with questions by calling 1-800-333-4542 and referencing Kia recall campaign number SC098. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V114000.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Mitsubishi is recalling 4,539 units of its 2013 Outlander Sport model built between June 11, 2012, and September 11, 2012. In these models, a stop lamp switch failure may cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously or intermittently, without the driver pressing the brake pedal. The brake/transmission interlock in these vehicles may also fail to work as designed, allowing the vehicle to be shifted out of Park without the brake pedal depressed. Either situation could increase the risk of a crash.

As this article is written, Mitsubishi has not established a schedule for making repairs. Owners may contact Mitsubishi with questions at 1-888-648-7820, referencing Mitsubishi recall campaign number SR-13-004. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V116000.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport AWD
To address a separate concern, Mitsubishi is also recalling 3,724 Outlander Sport AWD vehicles built between June 11, 2012, and December 11, 2012. These vehicles may have been assembled without certain fuel system components, which can cause a false fuel level reading, which could in turn lead to the vehicle running out of gas and stalling, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

To remedy the problem, dealers will install the missing fuel sending harness, free of charge. Mitsubishi has not, however, indicated when the repairs will be made. In the meantime, owners may contact Mitsubishi with questions at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's recall campaign number is SR-13-005, and the NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V112000.

2005-2009 Subaru Outback
Subaru is recalling certain 2005-2009 Outback models built from December 2003 to April 2009. The affected vehicles could suffer brake line corrosion due to salt water spray, which could allow brake fluid to leak, which would lead to longer stopping distances, resulting in an increased possibility of a vehicle crash.

The affected vehicles were originally sold or are currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Dealers will inspect the affected vehicles. If corrosion is not detected, the dealer will apply rustproofing in the form of an anti-corrosion wax. If corrosion is detected, the dealer will replace the brake lines and apply the anti-corrosion wax on the new components. Subaru has not determined when the work will begin.

Owners may contact Subaru with questions by calling 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQG-43, and the NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V110000.
