Recall Roundup: GM, Chrysler, BMW Issue Recalls

5/13/2013
In the past week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced five recalls by major auto manufacturers, including BMW, Chrysler, and General Motors. The affected vehicles go as far back as the 2002 model year, and the issues have to do with air bags, electrical connections, and coolant valves. Listed below, in alphabetical order by manufacturer, are the recalls issued in the last week.

2002-2003 BMW 3 Series Models

BMW is recalling a total of 42,080 vehicles from the 2002 and 2003 model years. These include certain 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi sedans; 325Ci and 330Ci coupes and convertibles; 325iT and 325xiT Sports Wagons; and M3 coupes and convertibles. The issue is a safety defect in the passenger-side front air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure, causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. If that happens, metal fragments could strike and injure both the passenger-seat occupant and other occupants. BMW intends to issue initial notifications to the owners of the affected vehicles this month. Replacement parts are expected to be available in July, at which time BMW will notify owners again to contact their dealers and schedule a replacement of the passenger air bag, free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. They should reference NHTSA campaign number 13V172000.

2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Commander
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured between February 11, 2004, and March 9, 2010, and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured between January 31, 2005, and March 10, 2010. In total, 295,345 vehicles could be affected by the recall. A transfer case electrical failure in these vehicles may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position, which in turn might allow the vehicle to roll away. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the software that governs the transfer case, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in June 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23, and the NHTSA campaign number is 13V175000.

2008-2012 Jeep Wrangler
Chrysler is recalling a total of 5,440 2008-2012 Jeep Wrangler right-hand-drive vehicles, manufactured between February 1, 2007, and October 10, 2011. The affected vehicles' driver's-side front air bags have defective clockspring assemblies that could lead to broken electrical circuits, which could in turn prevent the air bag from deploying on impact. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clockspring and add a steering wheel dust shield, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is M31, and the NHTSA campaign number is 13V176000.

2013 Ram 1500
Chrysler is recalling 498 model-year 2013 Ram 1500 trucks, manufactured between June 25, 2012, and December 12, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the coolant bypass valve may stick in a position that does not allow coolant to flow into the heater core. This could cause a buildup of moisture or ice, affecting the driver's ability to see outside the vehicle. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect coolant valves--and update their calibration--free of charge. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N25, and the NHTSA campaign number is 13V177000.

2012-2013 Buick LaCrosse & Regal, Chevrolet Malibu
General Motors (GM) is recalling a total of 42,904 model-year 2012 and 2013 Buick LaCrosse and Regal, and model-year 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco vehicles equipped with eAssist. These vehicles may have a condition that could cause the Generator Control Module (GCM) to malfunction, causing a gradual loss of battery charge and the illumination of the malfunction indicator light. This could lead to the vehicle stalling, or failing to start. It could also cause a burning or melting odor, smoke, and possibly a fire in the trunk. GM will notify owners, and dealers will test the GCM and replace it, as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 13136, and the NHTSA campaign number is 13V173000.
