Dodge Reveals More Powerful 2015 Challenger SRT

By: Jeff Youngs, 5/23/2014
One of the most identifiable American muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger just got a lot more muscular. As an alternative to the standard 392 Hemi V-8 engine, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT will offer a 6.2-liter "Hellcat" V-8 engine that provides more than 600 horsepower, according to Chrysler Group. (The standard engine delivers 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque--an upgrade from last year's model, which offered 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.) Both the standard and the new Hellcat engine come with an upgraded 6-speed manual transmission or an available TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission.

With the Hellcat engine also comes the largest front-brake package ever offered as standard equipment on a Chrysler Group vehicle, as well as the all-new Pirelli tire technology with class-exclusive standard Y-Plus rated four-season tires (available) that will stand up to heavier loads. Other noteworthy features include:

  • SRT-exclusive forged-aluminum wheels
  • An all-new, driver-focused cockpit
  • Performance-designed exterior that references Challenger's original muscle car heritage

"The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the ultimate performance muscle car," said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO--Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "Dodge is the mainstream performance brand, and now combined with SRT, we are able to unleash a true GT car with an all-new driver-focused interior and the TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission combined with the most powerful V-8 Chrysler has ever produced."

This new Hellcat engine is Dodge and SRT's first application of V-8 supercharger technology. It features a forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened bearing surfaces, resulting in a crank that can withstand firing pressures of 110 bar (1,595 psi), which Chrysler says amounts to the equivalent of five family sedans standing on each piston, every two revolutions. The specially tuned crank damper has been tested to 13,000 rpm. The Hellcat also features premium-grade, heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads that are optimized for superior thermal conductivity, according to Chrysler.

One of the most revolutionary features of the 2015 Challenger SRT is the all-new Drive Modes, by which each driver can fine-tune the driving experience: controlling horsepower, transmission shift speeds, steering (Challenger SRT only), paddle shifters (automatic transmission only), traction, and suspension. Drive Modes are pre-configured for a Default setting. The Sport setting delivers increased vehicle performance capability; the Track setting delivers maximum performance capability on smooth, dry surfaces; the Custom setting lets drivers set the drive experience to their exact specifications.

With the Hellcat engine, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT comes standard with two key fobs--red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full horsepower and torque potential; the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output. With either engine, a PIN code-activated Valet Mode will remap the engine to significantly reduce horsepower and torque and disable certain functions.

On the 2015 Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine, 15.4-in. Brembo 2-piece rotors with 6-piston calipers provide extra heat management/thermal capacity and longevity. This upgraded high-performance brake package is available on the 392 Hemi SRT model as part of the SRT Track Pack.

The 2015 Challenger SRT also features a new fascia design and an all-new vertical-split grille that provides what Chrysler characterizes as a "menacing update" to its 1971 inspiration. A larger, power-bulge aluminum hood features a dedicated cold-air intake. The design includes integrated projector fog lamps that are moved to the lower corners to help accentuate the car's width.

Eleven exterior colors are available, and twin, full-body stripes are available in Black Satin Gloss and Silver High Gloss on the SRT 392. The hood is standard in body color, and available in a contrasting Black Satin finish.

The interior of the 2015 Challenger SRT includes an all-new instrument panel with a stamped aluminum bezel, driver-selectable display screen, analog speedometer and tachometer gauges, and a new standard 8.4-in. Uconnect touch screen. The heated and ventilated front seats have been redesigned with improved cushioning and more comfortable contours. Also available are performance seats with large side bolsters for maximum lateral support in hard cornering. The seats can be covered in Nappa leather/Alcantara material with embroidered SRT logos. Laguna premium leather, colored either sepia or black with embossed SRT logos, is available as part of an equipment package.
