2014 Ford F-150 Offers New CNG/LPG Option

8/5/2013
Starting in 2014, the Ford F-150's standard 3.7-liter V-6 engine will be available with a new gaseous-fuel prep option that will allow it to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

"Businesses and fleet customers have been asking Ford to make F-150 available with CNG capability to take advantage of the fuel's low price and clean emissions," said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager.

The $315 option prepares the V-6 engine for conversion to CNG/LPG by installing hardened valves, valve seats, pistons, and piston rings. Buyers selecting this option can then choose an upfitter company from the automaker's list of Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifiers, which will install the proper fuel tanks, fuel lines, and fuel injectors. Ford estimates total conversion costs at $7,815 to $9,815, depending on the size of the fuel tank.

Because CNG averages $2.11 per gallon nationwide, and is available for much less in some regions, Coleman says, "With the money saved using CNG, customers could start to see payback on their investment in as little as 24 to 36 months."
