2014 Nissan Versa Note Attempts to Strike a Chord with Small Vehicle Buyers

1/25/2013
In other markets around the world, this vehicle is called the Nissan Note. In the United States, however, it will be known as the Nissan Versa Note, a compatriot in name and powertrain, but not design, with the existing Nissan Versa Sedan.

The new 2014 Nissan Versa Note is a 5-passenger, 5-door compact hatchback residing near the bottom of Nissan's vehicle lineup. It is equipped with a long wheelbase and short overhangs to maximize interior space while minimizing exterior length and features what is known within design circles as a squash line, providing extra character to the vehicle when it is viewed in profile. Active grille shutters contribute to a 0.298 coefficient of aerodynamic drag.

According to Nissan, the 2014 Versa Note's interior is equipped with class-leading cargo space behind the rear seat, with 21.4 cubic feet of volume. A standard Divide-N-Hide adjustable cargo floor creates a hidden storage bin at the bottom of the trunk, as well as a flat load floor when the rear seat is folded down.

Under the hood is where the 2014 Nissan Versa Note overlaps with the Versa Sedan. A 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine resides there, generating 109 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) optional. When the vehicle is equipped with the CVT, it gets 40 mpg on the highway, according to Nissan.

Nissan will offer the new 2014 Versa Note in 1.6 S, 1.6 S Plus, and 1.6 SV trim levels, with the option of adding an SL trim package to the vehicle. Standard equipment includes 6 air bags, traction control, stability control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist. A unique Easy Fill Tire Alert system makes it simpler for the Versa Note's owner to maintain proper tire pressures.

Power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a center console armrest are options on the Versa Note. Additional highlights from the optional equipment menu include Bluetooth hands-free connectivity with streaming audio capability, satellite radio, USB port, and a NissanConnect navigation system with smartphone pairing and hands-free text messaging capability. Versa Note buyers can upgrade to a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, passive keyless entry with push-button starting, fog lights, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. A reversing camera and a 360-degree AroundView Monitor system are also offered for the 2014 Versa Note.

Built in Mexico, the 2014 Nissan Versa Note goes on sale in the second quarter of 2013.
