Dodge Dart Registry Helps Woman Needing Cancer Treatment to Buy New Car

5/8/2013
The definition of crowdsourcing, according to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, is "the practice of obtaining services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community." Crowd-funding is a related concept describing online fund-raising for business start-ups, charities, and other causes. Recently, Chrysler launched a crowd-funding initiative called the Dodge Dart Registry, and this week announced the first Dodge Dart sale as a result of the new program.
According to the automaker, a woman named Toni* is first recipient of a Dodge Dart through the crowd-funding service. Toni, who must make long trips for medical treatment each week, needed a new car, and her family, friends, and fellow parishioners of the Northstar Church in Clifton Park, N.Y., raised more than $22,600 through the Dodge Dart Registry in just 21 days. More than 260 people contributed to "Toni's Registry," sponsoring specific parts of the Dart, such as the steering wheel, the seats, and the engine.

"When we first heard about the 'Dodge Dart Registry,' I thought it was a great idea that no one has done before to fund a car," said Jody Mostoller, who created a registry for Toni with his wife, Teri, and a friend, Kristen Burke. "Teri immediately thought about our friend and how creating a registry would be an easy way for people to help her get the new car she so desperately needed. The community rallied behind the idea and it was so much fun to watch it all unfold."

Hundreds of people gathered at Zappone Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Clifton Park to present a new Dart SXT model's keys to Toni. Additionally, Dodge provided a $2,000 gift card for gasoline purchases for her weekly trips to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where she is taking part in a clinical trial for treatment, and the automaker donated $20,000 to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.

*Out of respect for privacy, Dodge will not release Toni's last name.
