What are the Most Stolen Cars?

8/28/2013
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic are favorites of car thieves. If you own one built since 2000, though, don't worry too much. The bad guys favor the old Hondas, ones made between 1990 and 2000. Among older models, the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, and Toyota Camry round out the list of the top 5 most stolen vehicles in 2012.

Why are old Hondas such popular models on the most stolen cars list? There are plenty of high-mileage Accords and Civics still on the road, and those old cars require parts. Thieves steal them, chop them up, and part them out. According to the NICB, newer Hondas are not stolen as frequently thanks to improvements in anti-theft technology.

When it comes to the most stolen newer cars of the 2012 model year, the Nissan Altima leads the list, followed by the Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Camry, and Ford Fusion. Again, notice that these are popular models for which a vast parts business exists.

To protect your own car against theft, the NICB recommends the following:

1.    Lock your car. Thieves like it when you make life easier for them by leaving your car unlocked.
2.    Install and use a visible or audible warning device
3.    Install an immobilizer that prevents the engine from starting. Many new cars have these as standard equipment
4.    Install a tracking device. Many new cars include this technology as part of a telematics system. Service subscription fees may apply
