North American Car and Truck of the Year 2014 Short List Revealed

By: Jeff Youngs, 10/4/2013
Each year, members of the U.S. and Canadian automotive journalist community assess every new or substantially changed model in the market with the goal of selecting one car and one truck as the North American Car of the Year and the North American Truck of the Year. The selected jurors evaluate the vehicles based on design, comfort, handling, safety, innovation, value, and overall driver satisfaction, and during a three-stage voting process arrive at what the group collectively believes is the best new car and the best new truck for the model year.

For the 2014 awards, the group of 50 critics has taken its first vote, narrowing the field of potential winners by selecting 12 models in each category. Listed below are those makes and models that have made the "short list," which reflects the results of the first round of voting.

Note that the Buick Encore and long-wheelbase version of the Hyundai Santa Fe are included. Both models debuted for the 2013 model year, but were launched too late to be included in last year's voting.
