GM Full-Size Trucks, SUVs and Vans Recalled for Transmission Problem

General Motors is recalling 54,686 units of its full-size pickup trucks, SUVs and vans to inspect, and possibly replace, the steering column. According to the recall notice, the affected vehicles are all 2013 model-year trucks, SUVs and vans and were built between November 7, 2012, and December 18, 2012.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles may have been built using a fractured park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator gear, which allows them to be shifted out of Park when the ignition key is in the "Off" position or when the key is removed from the steering column. When the key is in the "Off" position, the transmission can also be shifted out of Park without applying the brake pedal.

Because this may lead to a crash, dealerships will inspect the vehicles and, if necessary, replace the steering column free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013.
