2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Design Details Revealed
Unlike in the past, the new 2014 Mercedes S-Class development team focused on building a long-wheelbase version of the vehicle, and then deriving a short-wheelbase model from that platform. Historically, the opposite approach has been taken. The reason, according to Mercedes-Benz, is that while in Europe and the United States, S-Class owners commonly drive their own vehicles, in Asia, the S-Class is usually driven by a chauffeur, which means the vehicle's rear seats are just as important as the front seats.
As a result of this approach, the automaker says the 2014 S-Class models' seats "lay claim to being the benchmark in automobile engineering."
Mercedes-Benz offers five different rear-seat options, depending on the wheelbase selected. Upgraded rear seats recline and offer individual power adjustments for the backrest and bottom cushion angle to ensure optimum comfort. New rear-seat seat belt air bags debut, and models with reclining rear seats get cushion air bags designed to prevent the rear occupant from sliding under the seat belt in a collision. An Executive seat is available for the new 2014 S-Class, providing 43.5 degrees of total backrest recline angle, calf support, and a heel rest on the right front seatback, which folds forward. A business center console with an integrated telephone handset, folding table, and extra storage compartments can also be specified.
Mercedes says the redesigned 2014 S-Class offers several "world firsts." New energizing massage seats are modeled on the hot-stone principle, with six different massage and heating programs informed by input from physiotherapists and psychologists. An active seat ventilation system provides reversing fans that can both draw cool air in or blow cool air out. A Warmth Comfort package includes 4-zone heated door panel and center armrests, heated center door panels, heated steering wheel, and a rapid-response Seat Heating Plus system.
A "world-first" Air-Balance cabin perfuming system is also available. Manually operated, Air-Balance is a perfume atomization system designed to individualize the vehicle's interior scent. Mercedes-Benz says that the result is not permanent, and that perfume molecules are not deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing. Air-Balance also enhances the vehicle's air filtration and air ionization systems.
In terms of design, Mercedes-Benz says "flowing, sensual, and elegant style" guided the automaker's approach to the 2014 S-Class interior, resulting in a cabin employing "perfectly coordinated use of materials and colors" where "high quality and elegance go hand in hand with clarity and functionality." Metallic switchgear, solid aluminum controls, pearl-effect paint finishes, wood trim, diamond-quilted dashboard leather, and ambient cabin lighting are among the treatments used by Mercedes-Benz to achieve its goals.
A Thermotronic automatic climate control system is standard, offering Focus, Medium, and Diffuse settings. Every 2014 S-Class is also equipped with dual 12.3-inch displays replacing traditional instrumentation, and styled to appear as free-floating elements with "corona effect" ambient backlighting. The left screen replaces the traditional gauge cluster, while the right screen offers control of comfort and infotainment systems. The right screen is equipped with the automaker's SplitView technology, which alternates pixels so that the driver sees a display different from what the front passenger is viewing. For example, SplitView allows the front passenger to watch a movie while the driver uses the same display for navigation.
An Intel Atom microprocessor, similar to those found in modern laptop computers, powers the new COMAND Online multi-media system. Optionally, the system provides multi-user, independent access to entertainment media sources from any seat, allowing the driver and each passenger to select unique programming from radio, TV, Internet, DVD, navigation, and USB-connected sources. In keeping with the vehicle's role as a chauffeur-driven vehicle, the driver can also route specific audio or video sources to individual displays and headsets of any passenger. Any one of these sources can be played over the vehicle's stereo speakers.
The 2014 S-Class is equipped with standard Frontbass audio speakers. Options include a Burmeister Surround Sound system and a Burmeister High-End 3D Surround Sound system. Additional infotainment features include an animated compass display for the navigation system, Driveshow programming similar to information displays shown on trans-continental and trans-oceanic airline flights, Google Map displays, and more.
