Top-Ranked Models in the J.D. Power 2013 APEAL Study
The results of the J.D. Power 2013 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM are in, and the following models receive awards for ranking at the top of their respective vehicle segments. The award recipients are revealed in this gallery, listed in alphabetical order by make and model.
2013 Audi Allroad
A new model for 2013, based on the previous Audi A4 Avant station wagon but equipped with a more rugged appearance and a raised suspension, the Audi Allroad ranks higher than the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque in the Compact Premium CUV segment.
2013 BMW 5 Series
In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the BMW 5 Series ranks higher than the Audi A6 and Lexus GS. For 2013, the 5 Series received a configurable Black Panel instrument display, an optional hands-free trunk opening and closing system, and an available 1,200-watt premium audio system.
2013 Buick Encore
A new small Buick model competing in the Sub-Compact CUV segment, the turbocharged 2013 Encore ranks higher than the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson to receive an APEAL award. The Encore also leads its segment in initial quality this year.
2013 Chevrolet Avalanche
Chevrolet is wrapping up production of its Avalanche pickup with a bang. It outscores the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 for an APEAL award in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment, having already received an initial quality award in 2013 from J.D. Power.
2013 Chevrolet Sonic
A small 5-door hatchback or 4-door sedan, the Chevy Sonic scores higher than the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent in the Sub-Compact Car segment. For 2013, a sportier Sonic RS model debuted. Additionally, new safety and infotainment features became available.
2013 Chevrolet Volt
An electric car that relies on a gasoline-fueled generator to extend range until it can be plugged in to recharge its battery, the Chevy Volt is the 2013 APEAL award recipient in the Compact Car segment. The Volt ranks ahead of the Volkswagen Beetle and Volkswagen Golf.
2013 Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger is the APEAL award recipient in the Large Car segment, thanks to a higher score than the Hyundai Azera and the Charger's platform-mate, the Chrysler 300. New colors, upgraded infotainment options, and revised option packaging help the 2013 Charger to better appeal to its owners.
2013 Fiat 500
In the new City Car segment, the Fiat 500 outscores the Chevrolet Spark and Smart Fortwo to earn an APEAL award. This year, the 500 Turbo model, electric 500e model, and performance-tuned Abarth convertible models join the lineup. Fiat also improved fuel economy and added new premium leather and audio system options for the 2013 model year.
2013 Ford F-Series Super Duty
Among Large Heavy Duty Pickup trucks, the F-Series Super Duty outscores the GMC Sierra HD and Chevrolet Silverado HD in the 2013 APEAL Study. This year, the Super Duty lineup added a new luxury-themed Platinum trim level and became available with a truck-specific version of MyFord Touch technology.
2013 Ford Mustang
Equipped with new styling and more power, the Ford Mustang is the top-rated Midsize Sporty Car in terms of overall appeal, outscoring the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. Notably, the Mustang tied the Camaro for the top slot in the same vehicle segment in the J.D. Power 2013 Initial Quality StudySM (IQS).
2013 Honda Odyssey
Minivan owners say the 2013 Honda Odyssey is more appealing than the Toyota Sienna and the Chrysler Town & Country. This year, the Odyssey gained Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, a USB port, and a reversing camera as standard equipment.
2013 Kia Soul
A Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle, the 2013 Soul outscores the Prius v and the Ford C-Max to earn an APEAL award. This is the second J.D. Power award in 2013 for the Soul, which also ranked highest in its segment in the 2013 IQS. Aside from making Bluetooth standard for 2013, the Soul sees few changes in advance of a complete redesign due for 2014.
2013 Land Rover Range Rover
The iconic Land Rover Range Rover is completely redesigned for 2013, and tops the Large Premium CUV segment in terms of overall appeal, ranking higher than the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and the Infiniti QX56.
2013 Lexus LS
After significant styling, engineering, safety, and technology updates, the Lexus LS ranks higher than the Audi A8 and the Hyundai Equus for overall appeal in the Large Premium Car segment. The Lexus also ranked highest in its segment in the 2013 IQS.
2013 Lincoln MKZ
Completely redesigned for 2013, the Lincoln MKZ is the most appealing Compact Premium Car, according to its owners, ranking higher than the Audi A4/A5 and the BMW 3 Series. Buyers can choose a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V-6, or a hybrid powertrain; options include all-wheel drive and a retractable glass roof.
2013 Mazda CX-5
Outscoring the GMC Terrain and Toyota RAV4, the Mazda CX-5 earns an APEAL award in the Compact CUV segment. A new model for 2013, the CX-5 debuts new design and engineering approaches that will spread to other members of the Mazda lineup in years to come.
2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
The redesigned Mercedes SL-Class ranks higher than the Porsche 911 and BMW 6 Series in the Midsize Premium Sporty Car segment. Mercedes offers the new SL as the SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG, all equipped with a power-retractable panoramic glass roof with available Magic Sky variable transparency technology.
2013 Nissan Armada
A large SUV based on the Titan pickup platform, the Nissan Armada ranks higher than the Toyota Sequoia and the GMC Yukon in the Large CUV segment of the 2013 APEAL Study. This year, the Armada has more standard equipment, and is offered with a new dual-screen rear entertainment system. A luxurious Platinum Reserve package--available only on the Platinum trim level--is also new.
2013 Nissan Murano
Among Midsize CUV models, the Nissan Murano ranks highest in its segment, ahead of the Buick Enclave and Honda Crosstour. This is the second J.D. Power award for the 2013 Murano, which also ranked highest in its segment in initial quality. This year, buyers could choose from new colors, new safety technologies, and new options for the Murano.
2013 Porsche Boxster
Redesigned for 2013, the mid-engined Porsche Boxster roadster is the top-ranked Compact Premium Sporty Car in the 2013 APEAL Study, ahead of the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class. Notably, the new Boxster also led its segment in the 2013 Initial Quality Study.
2013 Porsche Cayenne
Outscoring the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, the Porsche Cayenne is the most appealing Midsize Premium CUV according to its owners. Three new versions arrived this year: Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne GTS, and Cayenne Turbo. Buyers could also take advantage of a new European delivery program.
2013 Volkswagen GTI
New wheel designs and a couple of special-edition models mark the only changes to the most appealing Compact Sporty Car of 2013: the VW GTI. This model outscores the Mini Coupe/Roadster and the Hyundai Veloster to earn the J.D. Power award for this segment. A complete redesign arrives for the 2015 model year after an abbreviated run of 2014 model-year GTIs.
2013 Volkswagen Passat
One year after a complete redesign, the VW Passat ranks higher than the Kia Optima and Honda Accord in the Midsize Car segment in the 2013 APEAL Study. This year, the popular SE model gained rear-seat air vents, while a reversing camera became standard equipment for the SEL trim level.
