2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD Blends Diesel Engine and GTI Handling
If the idea of driving a GTI with a turbo-diesel engine is appealing, here are the details. The new Golf GTD is equipped with a turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine generating 184 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter available starting at just 1,750 rpm. For comparison, VW's current 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine is rated to deliver 140 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque.
A 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) dual-clutch automated manual transmission will be offered for the 2014 Golf GTD. Volkswagen says the new Golf GTD accelerates to 60 mph in less than 7.5 seconds and can achieve a maximum speed of 143 mph. Fuel-economy estimates are not available, but the current Golf TDI is rated by the EPA to return 30 mpg in the city, 42 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg in combined driving.
In addition to the high-torque turbo-diesel engine, the new Golf GTD is equipped with GTI upgrades including sport seats wrapped in tartan-plaid upholstery, sport steering wheel, black headliner, stainless steel pedals, and a unique shift knob. Automatic climate control, touch-screen infotainment system, and a park-assist system will also be standard for the Euro-specification Golf GTD.
Volkswagen expects to paint the redesigned Golf GTD in the same colors offered for the new GTI: Tornado Red, Pure White, and black. Unique design elements include revised front styling details, side skirts, rear diffuser panel, and a large rear spoiler over the rear window glass. A set of 17-inch aluminum wheels wearing 225/45 tires are bolted to the standard sport suspension, and the Golf GTD is equipped with smoked LED taillight lenses and dual chrome tailpipe outlets.
