2014 Mazda 3 Fuel Economy Ratings Set, Pricing and Equipment Announced

7/26/2013
Official EPA estimates for the 2014 Mazda 3 new compact sedan and 5-door hatchback models are a combined fuel-economy rating of 33 mpg when equipped with the standard 2.0-liter Skyactiv 4-cylinder engine.

Installed in the Mazda 3i models, this 155-horsepower engine is rated to get 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway with the manual gearbox, while the optional automatic transmission returns 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway. Add the car's optional i-ELOOP capacitor-based regenerative braking system, and the highway rating rises to 41 mpg, claims Mazda.

The 2014 Mazda 3 will also be available with a new 2.5-liter Skyactiv 4-cylinder engine generating 184 horsepower and, compared with the 2.0-liter engine, 35 extra lb.-ft. of torque. The EPA has not yet released fuel-economy estimates for the more powerful 2.5-liter engine, which is installed in the Mazda 3s models. Mazda, however, is forecasting between 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway depending on body style and whether i-ELOOP is included.

In addition to announcing fuel-economy numbers, Mazda set prices for the 2014 Mazda 3 lineup. The least expensive version of the car is the Mazda 3i SV Sedan, starting at $16,945.

The Mazda 3i Sport is offered in both 5-door hatchback and sedan body styles, beginning at $18,445 for the sedan and $18,945 for the hatchback. Sport models add Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, a CD player, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, cruise control, trip computer, map lights, tachometer, and more.

For 16-inch aluminum wheels, heated exterior mirrors, a passive keyless entry system, and upgraded interior and exterior trim, choose the Mazda 3i Touring. This version also includes blind-spot monitoring and a rear cross-traffic alert system in the price tag, which is $19,595 for the sedan and $20,095 for the 5-door hatchback. For another $1,600, the 3i Touring can be upgraded with a Touring Technology package including a premium surround-sound audio system with HD Radio, satellite radio, and Internet radio compatibility; a 7-inch color touch-screen infotainment system with navigation, SMS text messaging capability, E911 emergency services, and a reversing camera; dual-zone automatic climate control; dual USB ports; and more.

The Mazda 3i Grand Touring includes the Touring Technology package and adds a power driver's seat, leatherette seat upholstery, heated front seats, and a power sunroof. Prices are $22,745 for the sedan and $23,245 for the hatchback.

An automatic transmission is optional for all 2014 Mazda 3i models, adding $1,050 to the price tag. Also, the prices above and below do not include a $795 destination charge.

Switching gears, so to speak, the least expensive Mazda 3s is the Touring model, starting at $24,595 and including an automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a Sport driving mode. A manual gearbox will be offered for this model at a later date, according to Mazda. Differences between it and the Mazda 3i Touring include a standard Touring Technology package plus 18-inch aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, LED taillights, fog lights, heated front seats, power driver's seat, and leatherette upholstery. The price tag is $24,595 for the sedan and $25,095 for the hatchback.

Finally, Mazda offers the Mazda 3s Grand Touring Sedan ($25,995) and Mazda 3s Grand Touring 5-door ($26,495). These models add an adaptive front lighting system, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a power sunroof. They also get genuine perforated leather instead of leatherette. A Touring Technology package ($1,600) is optional for the Mazda 3s Grand Touring, equipping the car with i-ELOOP regenerative braking, active grille shutters, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning system, and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) technology.

When the redesigned 2014 Mazda 3 goes on sale in September, it will be offered in eight colors with a choice between black or sand cloth, black leatherette, and for the Mazda 3s Grand Touring, black or sand leather.
