2014 Volvo S60 R-Design Intends to Conquest Younger Buyers
"The S60 R-Design with lowered R-Design chassis, T6 engine and the optional 19-inch wheels hits all the right notes," says Doug Speck, senior vice president marketing, sales and customer service at Volvo Car Group. "More than half of the volume will be snapped up by buyers who drive other car makes today. These cars also play a vital role for lowering the age of our customer base."
The 2014 S60 R-Design is equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 325 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 354 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,000 rpm and 3,600 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, and the R-Design is equipped with all-wheel drive.
For 2014, new Advanced Quick Shift transmission programming activates when Sport mode is engaged or when the driver is using the paddle shifters, improving shift time by 30% to 50%, depending on the gear. As a result, the 2014 S60 R-Design is faster to 60 mph, according to Volvo, arriving at that velocity in 5.3 seconds compared to 5.5 seconds for the 2013 model.
The new S60 R-Design is equipped with a sport suspension lowered by 15mm. Spring stiffness is increased by 15%, bushing stiffness is increased by 20%, a strut tower brace is installed up front, and monotube dampers are installed in back. The R-Design gets a standard set of 18-inch aluminum wheels with more aggressive tires. Larger 19-inch wheels are optional.
To set the R-Design model apart from other S60 variants, it gets unique front styling anchored by a Tech Matte Black grille with a Silk Metal diagonal bar. Running lights are installed in the lower front corners and, at the back of the vehicle, a rear diffuser panel is flanked by dual round exhaust outlets.
Inside, the 2014 S60 R-Design is equipped with redesigned front sport seats with full leather upholstery and contrast stitching. A black headliner and stainless steel sill plates are included, and for 2014 the vehicle is equipped with new Adaptive Digital Display gauges offering Elegance, Eco, and Performance themes.
Additionally, the S60 R-Design benefits from the changes bestowed across the 2014 S60 lineup: Sensus Connected Touch smartphone connectivity and mobile Internet services, a low-speed Cornering Light feature, optional heated steering wheel, optional electrically heated windshield, optional auto-dimming side mirrors, an upgraded blind-spot information system option, new cross-traffic alert system, new Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake system, and more.
In New York, Volvo also announced that it would sell a station wagon version of the S60 in the United States. The new 2014 Volvo V60 will be available in R-Design format, offering the same upgrades discussed above.
