New TDI Clean Diesel Engine Coming for 2015 Volkswagen Models

When the 2015 model-year versions of the Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, Jetta, and Passat go on sale in the fall of 2014, they will be offered with a new 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel 4-cylinder engine that is more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the engine it replaces. The new TDI turbo-diesel engine is designated "EA288" within Volkswagen and was announced at the Automotive World Megatrends USA conference in suburban Detroit.

Douglas Skorupski, manager of technical strategy, Volkswagen of America, introduced the details of the new engine. "With the introduction of the new EA288 engine, we are excited that our family of TDI Clean Diesel vehicles is continuing to improve and will be even cleaner and more fuel-efficient and powerful," said Skorupski.

For now, Volkswagen isn't making fuel-economy predictions. The 2014 Jetta TDI Clean Diesel is EPA-rated to get 30 mpg in the city, 42 mpg highway, and 34 mpg in combined driving whether or not it is equipped with the standard manual or optional Direct Shift Gearbox automated manual transmission. Volkswagen will only state that the new engine will get better gas mileage.

The automaker is, however, quoting horsepower and torque figures. The new EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine is rated to make 150 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, delivering a 10-horsepower increase while at the same time generating the same amount of torque as before. Volkswagen says that the new engine produces fewer emissions, boasts improved throttle response, and experiences less internal friction, the latter enhancement contributing to better fuel-economy numbers.

This is an important engine for Volkswagen. Last year, one out of every four VWs sold in the United States was equipped with a TDI Clean Diesel engine, according to the company, and together with VW Group's luxury brand Audi, more than 100,000 TDI Clean Diesel vehicles hit American roads.
