GM Promotes EPA Combined Rating of 119 MPGe for 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV
In a statement, GM officials say that in a comparison to an average gasoline-powered vehicle, the Spark EV can potentially save its owners as much as $9,000 in fuel cost over five years. Additionally, GM's chief engineer for electrified vehicles points out that the Spark EV is not just efficient but will be fun to drive, thanks to the 400 lb.-ft. torque output of its electric motor, which is powered by a 21 kilowatt-hour (kWh) Lithium-ion battery pack. The fun aspect is that, according to GM, the car can set a 0-60 mph pace in less than 8 seconds.
Fast charging is another feature of the 2014 Spark EV. An SAE-approved combo charger for DC Fast Charging will be offered as an option. This charger has the capability to recharge up to 80% of the Spark EV's capacity in as little as 20 minutes. Charging can also be completed in less than seven hours using a dedicated 240V charger. The 2014 Chevy Spark's range is slightly farther than the Nissan Leaf's range and similar to that of the 2013 Honda Fit EV, another sub-compact EV, according to media reports. GM has said the new EV will be priced around $25,000 after federal tax credits.
Although the Spark EV will be produced by GM's South Korean operations, the motor and drive unit are being built at GM's plant in White Marsh, Maryland, outside of Baltimore.
The conventional gasoline-powered Chevrolet Spark was introduced in the U.S. market nearly a year ago. During the first three months of 2013, GM has delivered 8,762 Chevrolet Spark sub-compacts, according to a company press release. Demand for the Spark this year has risen in each of the first three months, with 3,538 unit sales in March. GM also sells the Sonic conventionally powered sub-compact model, which is the segment's second-best-seller.
*MPGe is a formula that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed to calculate the distance traveled and equivalent energy usage in comparison to fuel consumption in a gasoline-powered vehicle.
