2015 Ford Edge Completely Redesigned, More Refined than Ever

By: Jeff Youngs, 6/27/2014

Shortly after the first of the year, a redesigned 2015 Ford Edge will roll into a Ford dealer showroom near you, boasting a more chiseled and aerodynamic design, greater interior room, upgraded engines, and new technologies. The new midsize, 5-passenger crossover SUV is to be sold all around the world.

Four different versions of the new 2015 Edge will be available. The base model is the SE. The SEL is expected to be the most popular variant. The Sport version is the most powerful variant and is designed for added driver engagement, while the new Edge Titanium is the top-of-the-line edition with all the bells and whistles.

The standard engine for the SE, SEL, and Titanium versions is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that is expected to generate 245 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. An automatic start/stop system is an option for this member of Ford's EcoBoost family, which will tow up to 3,500 lbs. when properly equipped.

A 3.5-liter V-6 engine is optional for the SE, SEL, and Titanium trim levels, while the Edge Sport gets a new turbocharged, 2.7-liter V-6 engine that is predicted to make more than 300 horsepower. All 2015 Edges are equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a Sport driving mode. All-wheel drive is optional--a full-time continuously operational system that can send all of the engine power to the front or rear wheels as necessary.

To improve fuel economy, some versions of the new Edge are equipped with active grille shutters and air curtains that are designed to let the crossover slip through the atmosphere with less resistance. One positive side effect of improved aerodynamics is a quieter cabin, helped by a standard windshield made of acoustic glass. The Edge's interior is roomier than before, too, with gains in headroom, legroom, and cargo room.

New technologies debut with the redesigned 2015 Ford Edge. Among them, a new active glove box knee air bag is installed for the front-seat passenger, and the Edge can be optioned with a front camera that provides a 180-degree view of the area in front of the SUV. The camera also includes a washer jet to help clear dirt and grime from its lens.

Additionally, the Edge debuts an Enhanced Active Park Assist system that can guide drivers into perpendicular parking spaces in addition to steering into parallel spaces. An adaptive steering system is also new to the Edge, making it easier to maneuver the SUV at low speed at the same time that it makes the vehicle more stable at higher speeds, according to Ford.

The Edge is also available with safety features that Ford offers for its other models. Starting with the 2015 model, you can get inflatable rear seat belts and a lane-departure warning system. As is true of the outgoing Edge, a forward-collision warning system with brake support is optional for the new version.
