Recall Roundup: Chrysler and Honda Address Brake, Transmission, and Fuel System Issues

By: Jeff Youngs, 3/17/2014
Chrysler has recalled some 2014 Fiat 500L vehicles, as well as some Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles from the 2012 and 2013 model years. Also, Honda has issued a recall of nearly 900,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from model years 2005-2010 due to possible defects in the fuel pump strainer cover. Details are below, in alphabetical order by manufacturer.

2012-2013 Dodge Durango
2012-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Chrysler is recalling 18,690 model-year 2012-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured October 11, 2011, through October 1, 2012. Under certain braking events, the Ready Alert Braking system (RAB) may result in the driver experiencing a hard brake pedal feel, which could cause the driver to apply insufficient pressure, thus lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS module software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number associated with this recall is P05. Owners may also refer to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall campaign ID number 14V104000.

2014 Fiat 500L
Chrysler is also recalling 18,092 model-year 2014 Fiat 500L vehicles manufactured April 5, 2013, through January 22, 2014. In certain temperatures, moving the transmission shift lever may have a delayed effect or no effect on selecting a transmission gear. This could prevent the vehicle from shifting out of the Park position or could cause the vehicle to move in an unintended or unexpected direction.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter module or update the shifter software, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number associated with this recall is P06. Owners may also refer to NHTSA recall campaign ID number 14V103000.

2005-2010 Honda Odyssey
Honda is recalling 886,815 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump strainer cover may deteriorate, allowing fuel to leak out and increasing the risk of a fire.

Parts to permanently repair the affected vehicles are not currently available. Honda will notify owners with an interim letter during April 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners when the remedy becomes available, currently expected to be during the summer of 2014. Any vehicles that are currently leaking from the fuel pump cover will get a replacement original cover. All vehicles, including those receiving the interim repair, will get an improved cover when they're available. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. The recall numbers associated with this campaign are JD9 (inspection and/or preliminary part replacement) and JE0 (final parts replacement). Owners may also refer to NHTSA recall campaign ID number 14V112000.
