2014 BMW 535d Adds Turbodiesel Engine to Revamped 5 Series Lineup

5/21/2013
BMW has announced a number of upgrades for its 2014 5 Series lineup, including the addition of a new 535d model equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder Advanced Diesel engine. The new 2014 535d delivers 255 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 413 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,500 rpm and 3,000 rpm. Final fuel-economy estimates are not available as this article is written, but BMW promises "substantial fuel efficiency gains over its gasoline-fueled counterpart." The automaker will offer the new BMW 535d with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, with a base price of $57,525 that includes a $925 destination charge.

BMW also updates the 4.4-liter V-8 engine found under the hood of the 2014 550i. The turbocharged V-8 now generates what BMW characterizes as a "monstrous" 445 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque. The Sport Automatic transmission, which is standard for the 550i models, offers new Launch Control for faster acceleration, and BMW says the 550i rushes to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds while returning 10% greater fuel economy than before. Additionally, all 5 Series models receive re-tuned suspension and steering characteristics, as well as a coasting mode that disengages the powertrain from the drive wheels while the car is coasting in order to improve fuel economy.

Other changes for the 2014 5 Series lineup include minor styling and aerodynamic enhancements, standard xenon adaptive headlights, and slimmer taillights. New color choices and wheel designs are available for 2014, and BMW also offers the updated 5 Series in Luxury, Modern, and M Sport lines, similar to how it packages the 3 Series models. Inside, the 5 Series has chrome trim, bigger cupholders, and larger storage compartments. New upholstery and trim selections are also available, and the 2014 5 Series is now offered with adaptive LED headlights as an option.

A new version of iDrive is standard for all 2014 5 Series models, including navigation and a new rotary controller with an integrated touchpad for manually entering information. The iDrive4.2 system also includes revised menus, displays, and other features. A new rear-seat entertainment system option includes tablet-style display screens, and the 5 Series offers a new ambient lighting feature that allows illumination to range between bright white and glowing orange. Additionally, the optional Comfort Access system, which allows hands-free access to the cargo area, now includes hands-free trunk or tailgate closing, too.

Automatic tailgate operation is standard for the 2014 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, which continues in 535i and 550i models. In addition to the changes highlighted above, the 2014 5 Series GT models offer greater cargo capacity behind the rear seats.
