Top 10 Cars in the 2013 Vehicle Dependability Study

Each year, the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) measures the number of problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. The study asks vehicle owners about problems that occur within the 12-month period prior to when the study was fielded and converts the results into scores based on problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). In the 2013 Vehicle Dependability Study, the following (2010 model year) passenger car models received the 10 lowest PP100 scores, meaning they were the cars with the fewest problems in the 2013 VDS. They are listed below, in order beginning with the most-dependable model.


1) Lexus ES 350
In the 2013 VDS, the 2010 Lexus ES 350 achieves 58 PP100, well below the average of 126 PP100, and ranks highest in its segment. In fact, the ES is the top-performing passenger car overall in the 2013 VDS. For the 2010 model year, the ES 350's styling was freshened, and Lexus offered a new Enform telematics system with Safety Connect service. New standard equipment included leather seats, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, and rear-seat side-impact air bags.

2) Buick Lucerne
With 70 PP100, the 2010 Buick Lucerne is the second-highest-performing car in the 2013 VDS. Offered with a choice between a V-6 and a V-8 engine, the 2010 Lucerne received subtle design updates inside and out. The base model could be equipped with Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, while the Lucerne Super offered a chrome 18-inch wheel option.

3) Lexus LS 460
The 2010 Lexus LS 460 (72 PP100) performs third highest in the 2013 VDS. For the 2010 model year, the LS 460 received styling updates and a long list of technology upgrades. Highlights include standard Safety Connect service and Bluetooth audio streaming capability, as well as an optional Advanced Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, Driver Monitor System, and a Lane Keep Assist system. The LS 600 hL offered an Advanced Parking Guidance system and Intelligent High-Beam Headlights.

4) Lincoln MKZ
The 2010 Lincoln MKZ is fourth in long-term dependability among all car models in the 2013 VDS, achieving a score of 81 PP100. Lincoln restyled the 2010 MKZ on the outside and redesigned its interior, installing new materials, new seats, and wood, aluminum, and premium leather. The powertrain, steering, and suspension were upgraded, and the 2010 MKZ included new connectivity, information, entertainment, and safety technologies.

5a) Audi A6
In fifth position, tied with the Toyota Avalon, is the 2010 Audi A6, with 82 PP100. In 2010, the A6 received a more powerful standard engine, new heated steering wheel with the optional Cold Weather package, new Sport packages and upgraded Audi Multi-Media Interface (MMI) technology.

5b) Toyota Avalon
Tied with the Audi A6 as the fifth-most-dependable car in the 2013 VDS is the 2010 Toyota Avalon with 82 PP100. For the 2010 model year, Toyota made few changes to the Avalon.

7) Cadillac DTS
With 84 PP100, the 2010 Cadillac DTS is the seventh-most-dependable car in the 2013 VDS. In 2010, Cadillac cancelled the DTS Performance model, but made few other changes to its largest passenger car.

8) Chevrolet Camaro
In 2010, the Chevrolet Camaro returned to the American market with retro styling designed to evoke the 1969 Camaro model. Offered with a V-6 or a V-8 engine and with LS, LT, RS, or SS trim, the new 2010 Camaro proved popular with consumers. In the 2013 VDS, with 87 PP100, it is the eighth-most-dependable car in the study, well below the report average of 126 PP100.

9) Cadillac CTS
With 92 PP100 in the 2013 VDS, the 2010 Cadillac CTS is ninth on the list of most-dependable cars. For the 2010 model year, a new Sport Wagon body style arrived, offering additional cargo capacity and unique design. A new 3.0-liter V-6 engine became the standard power plant, and Cadillac offered it in conjunction with a new Eco Lux package that the automaker claimed would produce 30 mpg on the highway.

10) Volvo S80
The 10th-most-dependable car model in the 2013 VDS is the 2010 Volvo S80, with 93 PP100. The S80 received minor modifications to its styling and trim in 2010, as well as modifications to how customers could order options. A new Dynamic package aimed to give the vehicle additional handling capability.
