Recall Roundup: BMW, Chrysler Recall More Than 800,000 Vehicles

2/21/2013
BMW of North America and Chrysler Group have issued recalls on several vehicles, covering model years as far back as 2003, to resolve various manufacturing issues. More than 800,000 vehicles may be affected.

BMW of North America is recalling 1 Series coupes and convertibles from model years 2008-2012, manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; 3 Series coupes and convertibles from model years 2007-2011, manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 3 Series sedans from model years 2007-2011, manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 3 Series sports wagons from model years 2007-2011, manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and Z4 vehicles from model years 2009-2011, manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box on these vehicles may degrade over time, leading to a breakage of the connection and loss of electrical power to the vehicle, which, in turn, may lead to engine stall. A total of 504,545 vehicles may be affected.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. Concerned owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or e-mail BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID Number for this recall is 13V044.

BMW is also recalling as many as 30,265 model-year 2007-2010 X5 SAV vehicles, manufactured September 12, 2006 through March 18, 2010, and equipped with an 8-cylinder engine. The brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the hose, and the contamination could result in a loss of power-assist braking. BMW dealers will replace the brake vacuum line with one that contains a check valve, free of charge. Concerned owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or e-mail BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. The NHTSA Campaign ID number is 13V045.

Chrysler is recalling pickup trucks on which the rear axle pinion nut may loosen due to an undersized pinion spline. If the nut loosens, loss of control of the vehicle could result. These 278,222 vehicles include model year 2009-2012 Ram 1500 trucks, manufactured from February 27, 2008 through June 30, 2009, and from December 1, 2009 through October 20, 2011; model-year 2009-2011 Ram Dakota trucks, manufactured from February 27, 2007 through June 30, 2009, and from December 1, 2009 through September 30, 2011; model-year 2009 Chrysler Aspen trucks, manufactured from January 3, 2008 through December 18, 2008; and model-year 2009 Dodge Durango trucks, manufactured from January 3, 2008 through December 18, 2008. Chrysler dealers will install a pinion nut retainer, free of charge. Concerned owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. The NHTSA Campaign ID number is 13V038.

Chrysler is recalling 3,660 Dodge Viper vehicles from model years 2003 and 2004, manufactured from November 1, 2001 through June 30, 2004, because of a possible failure of the air bag control module that could cause air bags or seat belt pre-tensioners to deploy inadvertently. Dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge, although the remedy is not expected to be available until later in the year. Concerned owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. The NHTSA Campaign ID number is13V040.
