5 Fast Facts About the 2013 Hyundai Veloster

2/24/2013
Defying convention, the Hyundai Veloster is a 4-passenger hatchback with a rear-seat access door located on the passenger side of the vehicle. It shares its platform and its standard engine with the Hyundai Accent. For 2013, however, a new Veloster Turbo model debuts offering plenty of extra performance. Consumers shopping for an affordable sports coupe may want to consider these 5 fast facts about the 2013 Hyundai Veloster.

1) A 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the 2013 Hyundai Veloster. With the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the horsepower and torque figures are 138 and 132 lb.-ft., respectively. Order the 6-speed automated manual transmission, which Hyundai calls its EcoShift Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), and horsepower lowers to 132 while torque lowers to 120 lb.-ft.

2) The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is equipped with a turbocharged, direct-injection, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 4,500 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic and paddle shifters optional. According to Hyundai, the Veloster Turbo supplies a more favorable power-to-weight ratio than the Honda Civic Si, Mini Cooper S, and Volkswagen GTI.

3) To differentiate the Veloster Turbo from the standard Veloster, it receives modified front styling with LED running lights, ground-effects kit, unique 18-inch aluminum wheel designs with chrome inserts, special exhaust tuning with dual round center-mounted exhaust outlets, and LED taillights. Inside, the Veloster Turbo is equipped with standard Supervision gauges, leather seats, heated front seats, and a premium audio system. The Veloster Turbo is offered exclusively with a Graphite Black interior with blue accents, and Hyundai offers this model in Matte Gray for $1,000.

4) Hyundai plans to sell a new Veloster RE:MIX special edition later in the 2013 model year. The Veloster RE:MIX sits between the base model and the Veloster Turbo, and offers dark gray 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED front running lights, LED taillights, LED cabin lighting, and a unique body kit including a front spoiler, side skirts, and a rear diffuser panel. A premium sound system is standard for this model, as well as a keyless entry system with push-button ignition, and upgraded interior materials. Sprint Gray paint is unique to the RE-MIX model, but all Veloster models are offered with a summer performance tire option for 2013.

5) All 2013 Hyundai Veloster models are equipped with a 7-inch multi-function touch-screen display located in the center of the dashboard. Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability is standard, and the Veloster includes a Pandora Internet radio interface compatible with iPhone and Android devices. When the car is parked, a video game console can be hooked up to the Veloster when the available 115-volt power outlet is present, and games can be played on the dashboard screen. Blue Link smartphone pairing and telematics technology is also standard for the Veloster, and includes a limited-time subscription to a basic level of service. Highlights of this technology include voice text messaging capability, POI web search and destination download, turn-by-turn navigation, SOS emergency assistance, Automatic Crash Notification, and more.
